Advancing Prosthetic Care: Integrating Osseointegration Technology into Clinical Practice

2:30 PM - 3:45 PM Tue 17. Jun

Description

Osseointegration has revolutionized prosthetics, providing a promising alternative for patients facing challenges with traditional socket-mounted systems. This innovative approach enhances functional mobility, osseoperception, comfort, and gait, while reducing pain and offering improved biomechanical alignment, leading to a significantly enhanced quality of life. Advances in implant design, surgical techniques, and rehabilitation have contributed to over 1,300 successful surgeries, with the adoption of streamlined protocols reducing recovery time from 8–12 months to just 4–6 weeks.

Despite these advances, challenges such as the risk of ascending infection and the limited data on bone-anchored prostheses in amputee rehabilitation remain. This advanced symposium will cover the history, current practices, and future directions of osseointegrated implants, drawing on experiences from the Osseointegration Group of Australia. Key topics include implant design, patient screening, surgical techniques, rehabilitation procedures, and post-operative care, alongside insights into standardized global clinical protocols.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the prosthetist’s critical role in patient assessment, long-term care, and troubleshooting issues, as well as practical instruction on selecting and applying appropriate connectors, achieving precise alignment, and ensuring maintenance. Attendees will leave equipped to incorporate this cutting-edge technology into their clinical practice, offering improved outcomes and quality of life for patients who have struggled with traditional prosthetic solutions.

Statement of the objective / learning objectives

Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of osseointegration as a revolutionary alternative to socket prostheses. They will explore foundational principles, advanced fitting techniques, and standardized protocols to integrate this technology into clinical practice.
