The Use of Preserved Organic Matter in an Aesthetic Finish for Laminated Prosthetic Devices

4:45 PM - 5:30 PM Mon 16. Jun

Description

The aesthetics of a custom wearable, everyday device are important for the prosthetic patient population. An interesting or aesthetically pleasing device can increase the frequency of device use and increase patient motivation towards rehabilitation (Sansoni et al., 2016). While methods of customization for these devices exist, including the use of fabrics and resin pigments, little is known about the preservation of organic matter as a form of customization for prosthetic devices. This presentation will demonstrate drying techniques for organic materials such as foliage and flowers, as well as fabrication considerations for devices that incorporate these materials. The primary method to be demonstrated includes spray-gluing pressed foliage onto prosthetic layup prior to laminating with clear or pigmented orthocryl resin. This method ensures that there is no moisture present, which will maintain a high quality of lamination. Taking inspiration from popular resin preservation methods and drying techniques (Datta, 2016, Thamiselvan et al., 2021), a few different methods will be tested in a thin finishing lamination on a fabricated device during an educational field placement at Ottobock Canada. Some examples of methods that will be tested include dehydration, pressing, and the use of different resin types. Attendees of the ISPO conference will learn what has been determined as the best method for preserving two-dimensional organic materials such that they last within a laminated prosthetic device, which will allow them to perform a new type of customization that can be applicable to a patient’s personal interests or desires.

Statement of the objective / learning objectives

ISPO conference attendees will learn the best method for preserving two-dimensional organic materials within a laminated prosthetic device, allowing them to offer aesthetic finishes that are applicable to a patient’s personal interests or desires.
